MANAGEMENT - ‘WISE’!!!
Management skills practiced in ancient times have merely taken on new forms or structures;
whereas the underlying principles have virtually remained the same. An example
is given below.
Mahabharata
War Inevitable:
After
the exile period had terminated, Yudhishitra demanded back his kingdom of
Indraprastha. The last mission of the ambassador of the Pandavas (Lord Krishna)
to Dhritrashtra failed because of Duryodhana’s stubbornness and war became
inevitable. Dhritarashtra then sent his charioteer Sanjoy to persuade
Yudhishitra and Arjuna to restrain the Pandavas to get their rightful share by
highlighting the evil dimensions of war. Yudhishtira was not persuaded since it
meant running away from one’s duty. Fairness with Firmness: The
good are often misread as being weak. Up to a certain point goodness must be
practiced, but, at times, resorting to ruthless action in a competitive market
is essential. Careful planning by ascertaining the correct legal position,
finding competent allies and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the
opponents are all important. The wrong doer will project his actions as being
righteous and tender advice subtly to create difference amongst the members in
the opposing organization. Once, decided to take a tough stand, there should be
no withdrawing till the wrong doer is suitably punished. ·
Management must never negotiate out of fear but also should not fear to
negotiate. ·
The business environment demands fairness coupled with
firmness.·
At times, in the larger interest of the organization, it is necessary for the
manager to be ruthless and firm in taking decisions.
Management is meant for man to find harmony with the ‘age’ (era) in which he lives.
Basically the human mind being the same, the ancient wisdom is very much
relevant even in the modern context. Management is meant for man to ‘age’
(mature, evolve)
